2020 Corey Pavin Invitational
Shane Ffrench and Meghan Royal used consistent play to capture the 2020 Corey Pavin Invitational! The tournament was conducted on the challenging Jack Nicklaus designed Bear Creek Golf Club on July 1-2, 2020. The Invitational was originally slated for early May but was delayed due to COVID-19. Corey Pavin, the tournament’s legendary namesake, had a successful professional career winning the 1995 U.S. Open and an additional 15 PGA TOUR victories.
On day one of the Boys Championship, Jackson Moss and Ryan Abuan got off to solid starts to take the overnight lead after firing four-under par 68’s. Moss hit his stride late in his round rattling off four consecutive birdies to finish his front nine. Abuan took a different approach to 68 as his scorecard was blemish-free with four birdies. Shane Ffrench and Adam Duncan lurked one-stroke behind heading into Thursday’s final round.
With the Girls Championship, Meghan Royal jumped out in front of the field with the only red score on day one with a one-under par 71. Royal stayed calm and resilient all-day especially after a costly double-bogey on the par-3 12th. Heading into day two, Royal had a one-stroke lead over Karen Tsuru who was fresh off her second-place finish at the TTC at Arroyo Trabuco GC/Laguna Niguel CC.
Ffrench and Lincoln Melcher leap-frogged the day one leaders with two-day scores of six-under par 138’s. The contributing factor to their impressive final rounds was limiting the damage as Ffrench recorded only one-bogey en route to a 69 while Melcher had none for a closing 67. Ffrench made birdie on the first playoff hole on the par-4 10th to capture his first TTC title in his last ever appearance! He will head off to USC this fall. Jackson Moss finished solo third with a two-day four-under 140.
Royal fed off her strong day one play with a final round 72 to finish with a two-day one-under 143. Despite having two back-to-back bogies on holes 7 and 8, Royal remained calm and didn’t come unraveled finishing her round with two birdies and eight pars. She also finished five-strokes clear of her nearest competitors Alona Avery and Ashley Yun who finished at four-over par 148.
