LA QUINTA, CA | The Golf Club at La Quinta hosted the season’s 9th Toyota Tour Cup event. Nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountain range; this Gary Panks design was host to the PGA Tour’s Skins game from 2003-2006.
Round one was a birdie-fest as 8 girls and 18 boys posted scores of even par or better. Ashley Kim and Yana Wilson led the way for girls with -4, 68’s. Darren Chiu, Sihao Cong, and Timothy Jung all fired opening -5, 67’s on Saturday. However, the forecast for Sunday’s final round was calling for 25-35mph+ in the afternoon and would test their game physically and mentally.
Sunday scores were expectedly higher with both boys and girls averaging 2.9 strokes more to complete their round. Of the 14 boys under-par overnight, only two remained in the red when all was said and done on Sunday. Darren Chiu was able to put another solid round in on Sunday in the blustery conditions to finish at -4, 140 for the tournament and capture his first career TTC title. However, the girl’s championship had a different narrative. Beginning the day in the eighth spot and four strokes back was already two-time 2019 winner, Karen Tsuru. She followed up her even-par, 72 with a phenomenal -1, 71 to steal the title away by a single stroke over Ashley Kim.
Congratulations to our Champions in the Desert, Darren & Karen!
