Winners were crowned with the Pacific Ocean in the distant as Monarch Beach Golf Links hosted the College Showcase event on March 15th-16th. The College Showcase consist of a field full of only sophomore, juniors and seniors that are eligible to participate. The landscape throughout the weekend was picture perfect, with a sunny 75 degrees and costal views, it was an ideal place to spend a delightful weekend.
The course was in immaculate condition with wonderful weather all weekend overlooking the sparkling ocean. The wind remained gusty throughout the first round, as higher scores reflected the tougher conditions. As Sunday approached, it was an excellent day to be on such a beautiful piece of property watching excellent golf. The course was set up challenging for a par 70, with the boys playing at a yardage of 6,500 while the girls were playing near 5,400.
Dean Sakata posted a first round of 67 and kept the solid play going into round two with a 71, for a two day total of two under, 138. The Diamond Bar native captured a win on his final Toyota Tour Cup event of his career before he will enroll into the Academy in the fall and be a part of the Army Golf Team, in which everyone at the SCPGA wished Sakata the best of luck. Davis Holman of Yorba Linda made a late surge in round two, posting a two under round of 68 to finish even for the event, but falling two strokes short of Sakata. Coming in third place with consistent rounds of 71-70 was Jefferson Kao of Diamond Bar.
The girls division was there for the taking in round two, as ten players still found themselves in contention after round one within five shots. With scoreable conditions and a calmer breeze, many players were in the hunt to post a low round. ZiJun Ester Lee of Diamond Bar did just so and posted an even par round of 70 to have a two day total of 145 (75-70), making her victorious in a three shot victory. Brigitte Dunne (76-72) and Marni Murez (75-73) were knotted in second place with a respectable two day total of 148.
The SCPGA would like to congratulate all top finishers at the Toyota Tour Cup College Showcase event and their solid performance.
A huge thanks goes out to all those that support each event. Monarch Beach Golf Links was an excellent venue with fabulous staff and would like to thank Mr. Eric Lohman, PGA for the support. Many compliments were given on the fine golf course and much deserved. The sponsors always play a vital role and Toyota is a cornerstone in making events possible. Finally, thank you to the dedicated Rules Officials who are out there each weekend to assist the juniors and continuously teach valuable golf lessons.
The next Toyota Tour Cup Series will be held at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee on March 22-23.
