The Toyota Tour Cup crew packed up the trailer and headed south to San Marcos to set up the 54-hole event at Twin Oaks Golf Course. With the launch of our new SCPGA Snapchat account; players were able to follow @SCPGAJrTour and watch the stories as they unfold.
Players teed off early and began their marathon day of golf to complete 36 holes by day’s end with only a short break between rounds to turn in scorecards. After all was said and done, two were tied at -8 in the boys division: 2015 runner-up, Cullen Plousha and Clay Seeber. On the girl’s side, only Annika Chickering stood alone at the top at -1. Well within striking distance were a trio of players vying for a trophy: Vanessa Wang, Samantha Martirez, and Mary Shin all tied for second at +3.
The stage was set for an exciting finish as the Jr. Tour’s best set their sights on the trophy. Scoring conditions were optimal and several boys took full advantage led by Gian-Luca Martinez carding a tie for tournament low -6, 66 and vaulting him into a T2 finish at -9 with Darren Lin. However, holding off the rest of the field with another round in the 60’s was (already three time 2016 winner) Clay Seeber at -11. Only two girls were able to come in under par on their third and final round; Chon carding a -1, 71 for a 4th place finish, and Borja tying the tournament low -2, 70 to claim her first trophy of the season. Just edging out Borja was Vanessa Wang playing her final two rounds in two under par. However, Chickering was able to fend off the attacks and go wire-to-wire. It was especially memorable as this was her first career TTC victory as well as being the last she will ever compete in as she is off to Wichita State in the fall.
Congratulations Clay & Annika!
