The unpredictable weather of Southern California met the Toyota Tour Cup at Oak Valley Golf Club. Desert golf at its finest as players arrived Saturday morning to start range sessions, ready for snow weather and tee’d off wearing shorts and no sweaters. By 10:00 PM Oak Valley was a nice 85 degrees in the middle of February. The golf course was in phenomenal shape as the greens firm and rolling fast.
Tee times started at 7:30AM and the kids where off and running. The fields were stacked with top ranked 2015 Tour Cup players looking to make an early statement for the 2016 season. Clay Seeber was ready to play coming off his first Toyota Tour Cup win, looking to start the season with back to back Tour Cup victories. Seeber shot 69 to open the event, playing his way into an early one shot victory over Temecula’s Ryan McCoy.
The girls where underway off hole 10 to start the day as Yoonju Shin off to great start looking for her first Toyota Tour Cup victory. Yoonju shot the only under par number for the girls on Saturday. Not far behind was Hailey Borja who shot even par (72), and Zoe Campos who closed the final pairing shooting plus 1 (73). Sunday was sure to be a fun finish as these girls where playing some amazing golf on a challenging golf course.
Sunday was full of excitement as players looked to hold on for win, and others looked to make a jump into the top 10 and top 6 for their yearly exemption. The final pairing for the girls consisted of Yoonju Shin, Hailey Borja, and Zoe Campos. For the boys Clay Seeber, Ryan McCoy and Edwin Kuang played in the final group ready to go low and walk away with some hardware. Just before the first hole for the final group round 1 leader Clay Seeber cut his thumb badly enough to make any golfer rethink finishing a round. Seeber decided to continue playing and battled through injury looking for his second Tour Cup win. Ryan McCoy however made the most of his Sunday shooting 67 to claim his first victory of the 2016 season. Puwit Anupansuebsai, Nick Robinson, and Clay Seeber all finished tied second.
The girls aside from Yoonju Shin struggled the second day of competition. Yoonju shot 75 day 2 to hold on for her first Tour Cup victory of the 2016 season. Katie Stribling on day when under par scores were few and far between shot one under par (71) to finish second in competition just one stroke back of the leader. Taking third place in only her third Toyota Tour Cup event Amari Avery shot one over (73) caming back from seventh place!
