The Toyota Tour Cup stayed local at one of Los Angeles’ premier private clubs. MountainGate Country Club is perched high up within the Santa Monica Mountains and boasts a challenging hilly layout with scenic views of the West Los Angeles area. Players needed a tough mental game and maintain their stamina to survive walking 36 holes in 90+ degree temperatures.
Round one flew by as the first half of the field finished in 4:05-4:15 with the help of SCPGA staff and Rules Officials. However, the wonderful pace did not yield many low scores as only one player managed to finish round one in the red (Darren Lin -6, 66). Several boys tied for second at +1, 73 were ready to make a move to catch the leader. 2015 Tour Cup Championship winner Crystal Wang played in her first TTC event this season and got off to a hot start leading the way firing a +2, 74 with a two-stroke advantage over Rosie Park (+4, 76).
As the temperatures heated up so did the scoring. Several boys made a move on Lin shooting in the red (Clauss, Aragon -1, 71 and Brothers -2, 70), however the seven stroke lead was a little too much to overcome. Lin captured his second career TTC victory with a -3, 141 for a five stroke victory over Luke Winfield (+2, 146). The girl’s competition heated up as well and was a much tighter race than the boys as the top five were separated by one stroke each. However, only one would emerge victorious. Shooting the tournament low for girls with an even par round of 72 and earning her first career TTC victory was Santa Barbara’s Sienna Scibird.
Congratulations Darren & Sienna!
