Monarch Beach Golf Links is one of the premier stops on the Toyota Tour Cup schedule each year. 85 degree weather with a cool ocean breeze awaited a full field of eager TTC members this past weekend. Monarch, known for its coastal views; grand club house; and five star amenities, is anything but a walk in the park. Although each division’s yardages were much shorter than the players are used to, Monarch Beach gave them all they could handle.
With an 11:30 AM start time, winds had already begun to kick up as players started their rounds. There were a few early highlights on the front side for the boys where both Nick Robinson and Ryan McCoy holed their second shots for eagle on the par 4 second hole. That however, was no indication of how the course would play as only two under par scores were recorded on the first day, that of Ryan McCoy (68) and Yu Chuan Hsiang (69) who birdied holes 11, 12, and 13 in route to a 3-under par back nine. Brittany Park and Ashley Kim led the way for the girls, each firing a 1-over par (71).
As they usually do, the players seemed to have learned something from their first lap around as there were 9 scores of even par or better and the boys scoring average dropped a half a shot. Shiyang Fan pulled off an impressive feat by eagling the par 5, 7th which has notoriously given the players fits over the past several years. This year alone it averaged 0.67 strokes over par and yielded 9 scores of triple bogey or worse! However, it would not be enough to overtake eventual winner Brittany Park who shot 71, 73 for a two day total of 4-over par (144) for a two shot victory over Ashley Kim. New Toyota Tour Cup member Ryan McCoy, who earned his TTC membership as low medalist in Spring Qualifying School in February, got his first victory in his young career on the Tour Cup Series by shooting back to back 68’s for a 5 shot victory over Zach Schradermeier and Yu Chuan Hsiang. Ryan looks to ride his hot play of late as he heads to Cross Creek Golf Club this weekend in his hometown of Temecula, CA.
