MURRIETA, California – The first of three Golf Pride Fall 2-Day tournaments came to a close at The Golf Club of California. The course, a Trent Jones Sr. design, featured challenging par-3’s and required stellar shotmaking. It was the last few holes, however, that provided a dramatic and pressure-packed finish in both the Girls and Boys Championship.
Round one action saw Ryan Abuan of Temecula and Euna Lee of Irvine take the overnight lead with two-under par 70’s. Abuan was able to convert four birdies with two bogeys for a two-under par 70. Annabell Lee led the Girls Championship after four-birdies and two-bogey, with two of the birdies occurring on par-3’s.
During round two of play, Daniel Heo of Cypress, who started the day one-shot off the lead, started to catch fire on the back-nine. He strung together three consecutive birdies down the stretch on holes 13, 14, and 15 to take the tournament lead. Haram Shin of Los Angeles also made a late charge for the Championship title going five-under on his last four-holes but finished one-stroke shy of a tie for the lead. Abuan had a fair amount of ups and downs throughout his rounds with five birdies but had five costly bogeys littered throughout his scorecard taking him out of contention.
As the dust settled Heo took first place title for the Boys Championship with a two-day four-under par 140, Shin finished second with a three-under par 141, and Abuan took solo third with a two-under par 142.
Annabell Lee was not as sharp as she was during round one as evidenced by some struggles early in her round. She bogeyed 3-5, 11, and 12 to make things close as the tournament drew to a close. Annabell Lee of Mission Viejo stayed patient all-day and found success late in her round with birdies on 13 and 17. Her effort fell just a shot short as she finished solo second.
The Girls Championship concluded with Euna Lee taking first place with a two-day one-over par 145, Annabell Lee at second with a two-over par 146, and Erica Lee of Arcadia in third at four-over par 148.
The next two Golf Pride Fall 2-Day tournaments take place at Arrowood Golf Course (October 26-27) and Oak Valley Club (November 23-24).
