The 2014 Players Tour Spring Series came to a close this past weekend with the completion of the Bridgestone Series Championship hosted by Empire Lakes Golf Course. With ideal course conditions and an average temperature of 78 degrees, the field of 140 individual Spring Series Champions set the stage for a truly exhilarating event.
The 9-11 age divisions competed on the back nine of the Arnold Palmer designed championship layout and produced incomprehensible results with
Phichaksn Maichon from Beverly Hills firing a three-under-par two-day total of 69. Following close behind were Alexander Gibalevich from Studio City, CA and George Lu who carded a one-under-par 35 during his second round to take individual second place honors with an even par two-day-total (72). Rose Zhang (74) competed and took individual honors for the Girls 9-11 age division firing two rounds of one over par and beating out Elyse Kim (75) by a single shot.
Daisy Wan fired a first round total of 73 to place herself in contention for the final round of the championship on Sunday morning in the Girls 12-14 age division. Wan followed up her round one play with an impressive 77 to card a two-day-total of 150 (+6) and claim her first place finish. Following close behind was Chae-Rim Lee of Irvine, CA and Elise Sumner of North Tustin, CA who both finished with at two-day-total of 152 (+8).
The race for the Boys 12-13 individual title was extremely close where first, second, and third place was determined by a single shot. Jonathan Ku (150) from Mission Viejo, CA made a move up the leaderboard Sunday by posting a two-over-par round of 74 to take third place outright. Second place was taken by Brad Calubid from Long Beach, CA who posted an even par first round of 72 followed by a 77 to card a two-day-total of 149. Alexander Pak from San Clemente, CA medaled in his age division by posting two consistent rounds of 74-74 (148).
Christine Perez tied the low round of the tournament posting a four-under par 68 in round one poising herself to make an impressionable finish on the leaderboard. Halie Lasken made a charge in the second round of the Championship firing a 73 to win the individual title by one posting a two-day total of 147.
The Boys 14-15 and Boys 16-18 age divisions put on an absolute show lead by frontrunners Jacob Johnson from Ventura,
CA and Andrew Fernandes from Cerritos, CA who both finished first in their respective age divisions with a two-day total of 143. Johnson had 9 total birdies for the tournament and had a total of 30 holes at par or better, second to only Nick Robinson of Rancho Palos Verdes Estates, CA. Fernandes made advances on Par-3’s leading the field in the respective scoring average as he was a total of -3 for the tournament. Propelling Fernandes to his first place finish in the Boys 14-15 age division was his eagle on the Par-4 Third in the final round.
