The 43rd annual Junior America’s Cup was held on July 28-30, 2015 at Pine Canyon Golf Club in Flagstaff, Arizona. This year’s tournament field consisted of 18 teams from 12 western states including two teams representing Canada and Mexico. The team representing Southern California included Sam Choi, Joseph Chun, Justin Kim, and Chase Furey. The team was captained by SCPGA staff member Kevin Smith.
As play began on Tuesday, July 28th, it didn’t take much time for all players in the field to notice the extreme elevation change of 7,300 feet in Flagstaff, AZ. The teams who got acclimated to the elevation change seemed to take the early lead in round one. Wyoming and Oregon jumped out of the gate to fire 10 under par on day one and take the lead heading in to day two. Team Southern California trailed by three shots after a round of seven under par, led by the consistent play of Sam Choi (68), Chase Furey (69), and Joseph Chun (72).
The Southern California team seemed to get adjusted to the course conditions for round two as they came out firing on all cylinders, shooting an impressive 13 under par for round two. Again, Sam Choi led the way with a five under par (67), Joseph Chun (68), and Justin Kim (68). The stellar round catapulted team Southern California to the top of the leaderboard and gave them an 11 shot lead heading into the final round.
The players knew they couldn’t let off the throttle just yet and needed to continue playing well during the final round to close out the tournament. With typical Sunday hole locations, the course was playing drastically more difficult during the final round. As several teams made a push near the top of the leaderboard, team Southern California continued with its amazing play by staying in the moment and hitting quality shots. By the day’s end the team from Southern California won with a tournament total of 25 under par (623), good for a 13 shot victory. Sam Choi continued upon his great play during the week and closed the event out by draining a 35 foot putt on the final hole of regulation to conclude with a three under par (69) and low individual medalist honors. Justin Kim and Joseph Chun also shot rounds of one under par (71) and Chase Furey concluded with a final round (72). Southern California was the only team to not count a single round above par all week long. Congratulations Team So Cal!
