PEBBLE BEACH, CA – The 2018 Challenge Cup saw 12 of the finest junior golfers in our program travel to Northern California to play a match play event against 12 of the finest junior golfers from the North. After traveling to Pebble Beach Ca. team SoCal tuned up with a practice round on the tough par-71 Poppy Hills.
After the practice round a small banquet and pairings event was hosted by team NorCal. There was no fear from team SoCal as many players expressed their desire to go up against the best players from NorCal both Boys and Girls. The team events included a four-ball 9 hole match and a foursomes 9 hole match for the two golfer teams. The JTNC took a commanding 9-3 over the Southern California Junior Tour on opening day of the 2018 Cup, running the table in both Foursome and Four-Ball on a rainy Wednesday. One bright spot on the grey day was Guy Clauss and Tyler Schaffer taking their match and several others winning halves in their competition.
Day two it was time for singles. Giving it their best while fighting from a 9-3 deficit were singles winners Jasmine Lew, Amari Avery, and Ray Navis. However the JTNC claimed a 17-7 victory over the Southern California Junior Tour, closing out play in the two-day event at Poppy Hills Golf Course with an 8-4 win in Singles play.
Now in its third year, the Cup too has become a hot spot for collegiate coaches looking to scout available players. Among the programs out in the rain watching first round action were University of Oregon, Stanford, Oklahoma State, North Carolina and Illinois.
