Team Southern California ventured into Modesto, CA to compete in the 2016 Girls’ Junior America’s Cup. This year the girls team was captained by Junior Golf Director, Kevin Smith, and the players consisted of some of the Toyota Tour Cup’s finest; Brianna Navarrossa, Mary Shin, Ashley Kim & Kailie Vongsaga.
The team got off to a good start on day one as they found themselves sitting one shot back of team Arizona at 7 over par. However, the second round proved to be moving day for team So Cal as they got off to a hot start and never looked back. Led by Brianna Navarrosa’s low round of the tournament (68), team So Cal took the commanding lead and finished the second round at one under par. Mary Shin (73), Kailie Vongsaga (74) and Ashley Kim (78), all provided the support needed to position themselves 8 shots ahead of team Mexico with one round to play. Team Mexico got off to a blazing hot start in the final round as two of their players were a collective six under par through the first six holes. Team So Cal needed to step up to this challenge, and they did just that as every player was under par through the opening stretch in the final round. In the end, Team So Cal’s firepower proved to be a little too much, and they began to distance themselves from the rest of the pack. Once again, led by Brianna Navarrosa (71), Kailie Vongsaga (74), Mary Shin (75), and Ashley Kim (76), the Southern California team claimed a 15 shot victory and its first Girls’ Junior America’s Cup win since 2009.
Brianna Navarrosa’s stellar play throughout the competition earned her the individual medalist honors in this prestigious championship. She finished with a two under par total and rounds of 75, 68, 71, for a four stroke victory. Good playing Bri! We would also like to congratulate the other team members on the So Cal squad who played some fantastic golf as well. Mary Shin finished tied for fifth place with rounds of 75, 73, 75. Ashley Kim finished tied for eleventh with rounds of 74, 78, 76, and Kailie Vongsaga also finished tied for eleventh with rounds of 80, 74, 74. Congratulations team So Cal for taking home the prestigious honor as champions of the 2016 Girls’ Junior America’s Cup!!!
We would like to thank the Tournament Director Wendy Stuart, PGA, GJAC Committee, JGANC staff, and Del Rio Country Club for hosting this wonderful event. It was a fantastic team effort and all the players really enjoyed this great experience.
Also, the Southern California team would like to give a special thanks to our host family, Norm and Marilyn Porges. We are truly grateful for their generosity and hospitality during the week as they housed our players for the entirety of the championship. The girls formed an instant connection and lifelong bong with these two wonderful people, and we couldn’t be more thankful for everything they did to support the team. They truly made this a memorable experience for the Southern California team.
