This past December 5th and 6th, the SCPGA Junior Tour held it’s Bridgestone Fall Tournament of Championships. Every winner from the fall Players Tour series was invited to play against their toughest opponents on a difficult Soboba Springs Country Club layout. With 124 players registered you knew that the competition was going to be fierce. Day one was delayed by frosty conditions in the morning with play commencing about an hour after scheduled tee times. The cool air did not deter any of the players as they played hard and posted some good scores on one of the more difficult courses that any of the SCPGA Jr. Tours frequent. Michael Zhang was low for the 15-18 Boys on day one posting a one over 73. The 27 player field averaged 7.5 shots over par so Michaels round was very solid. The 14-18 Girls day one leader was Anna Dong with a 75 and Rosie Park right on her heels with a 78. Girls in the 12-13 division were led on the first day by four players at 79 Nguyen, Salvador, Villegas, and Jang. The 12-14 Boys division had more than one player leading after the first day as Hong, Hartanto, and Huang all carded very nice 77’s. The 9-11 Boys division had Park, Bautista, and Jung all sleeping on the lead after signing for one over 37’s. Our 9-11 year old Girls also had some solid scores on the first day and were led by Azadeh Varnado with a 39.
After adjusting the tee times on day two in order to beat the frost, Mother Nature delivered balmy temperatures in the high 50’s. No matter, with the players ready to go and the leaders getting that little bit of extra sleep, day two was underway. In the 9-11 Girls we had Winner Angela Liu and runner-up Ashley Yun both turn in 37. Third was captured by Nalani Sam who won a scorecard playoff by shooting a 42 on day 2. Some of the smallest boys showed the biggest heart as Patrick Hong outlasted Hogan Park in a six-hole sudden death playoff after both players carded two day totals of 73. Third place was won by Sam Ng who shot even par 36 on day two to grab a scorecard playoff. The day one Girls 12-13 log jam showed when the dust had cleared and we had Sabrina Nguyen in first at 158, Arlene Faye Salvador in second at 159, and Meg Yoshida in third with 160. Only 6 shots separated our winner from two players tied for 7th, which was more than half of the field, great playing! The 12-14 year old boy’s winner was David Huang who pulled away from the three way tie to shoot 71 and win by 5 shots. Second went to Dylan Mentante and third to Ryan Hartanto. 14-18 Year old girls had Anna Dong holding on to her lead and increasing it by one to win by four strokes. Second place was Hailey Borja who bested eventual third place finisher Rosie Park in a scorecard playoff. The 15-18 year old boys division was won by Han Seop Lee who shot a fantastic three under 69 to win the tournament by one shot and shoot the lowest round of the weekend. Michael Zang bested his day one score by one and took home a second place trophy and points. In third, Tyler Schafer stayed consistent with a second day 74 to match his first day score.
Congratulations to all of the Bridgestone “Champions” and to all those invited, who are champions in their own right.
