VALLEY CENTER, California – Mother Nature unleashed her wrath dropping five inches of rain on Carlton Oaks causing devastation that forced the shutdown of the entire course for over a week.
Luckily Woods Valley Golf Club was not too far away and was gracious enough to take in the Toyota Tour Cup which was a tremendous success. They, too, received six inches of rain overnight leaving the par-3 third green entirely covered in three feet of water as of two days prior. Thanks to phenomenal work by the superintendent and crew, the third green was back in perfect shape by the weekend.
Round one saw some great play from both boys and girls on a challenging layout where accuracy outweighs distance. Round one leaders for the boys were Tyler Guo, Jake Marek, and Alrik Pan with rounds of -3, 69. While the girl’s leader was Angelina Kim firing a -4, 68 holding a four stroke lead over Olivas Links champ, Anna Dong.
Day two was shaping up to be a tight race surely to come down to the final hole to determine the champions. However, Andi Xu had something else in mind going ballistic out there firing a career best -7, 65 to take a four stroke victory and claim his first Toyota Tour Cup title of his young career. Angelina Kim was able to fend off the low round of the day by Serena Sepersky (71) and hold on for her first TTC victory of the 2017 season. Congratulations to our champions!
Special thanks to Titleist, Woods Valley Golf Club staff, and SCPGA Rules Committee.
