The Toyota Tour Cup stopped in the Temecula valley at the challenging Redhawk Golf Course. The weather was fantastic with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80’s. Redhawk Golf Course is no bombers paradise and quickly showed its teeth from the first tee; a short (but tight) dogleg right par five that yielded only 24 birdies the entire weekend. It was a sign of what was to come as the entire course challenged players with a mix of tight fairways, blind tee shots and multi-tiered greens. The boys turned in only five rounds under-par day one led by Matthew Wolff carding a -4, 68 while the girls had just two players going low at -1, 71 (Bella Setio & Anna Dong). However, the highlight of round one went to Lake Forest’s Hailey Borja dropping an ace on the tricky four-tiered par-three fourth hole! Congratulations!
The final round again had optimal weather for the players to attack the difficult hole locations. The early groups out took advantage and several players went low with seven boys shooting under-par rounds led by Christopher Trivell tying the tournament low with a -4, 68. However, nobody was able to catch the Agoura Hills native, Matthew Wolff, as he held on to win by one stroke for his first TTC victory of the 2016 season. The girls also had some great play led by Chayse Gomez carding the tournament low for girls with a -2, 70 to vault her into a second place finish. There was a tie for third place between Sarah Fouratt & Leila Dizon, with Dizon winning the USGA recommended scorecard playoff. With a share of the lead going into the final round, Bella Setio stayed consistent shooting a +1, 73 to just edge out Gomez for her first career TTC victory.
Congratulations Matthew and Bella! Special thanks to Redhawk Golf Course Head Golf Professional, Michael Kelly and all of their staff. Rules Officials, Ron O’Connor, PGA, Terry Startzel, Gary Wilson, Dianne Wilson, and Keith Reinking. The Toyota Tour Cup’s next stop is the College Showcase at Monarch Beach Golf Links on April 23rd-24th.
