The Toyota Tour Cup made its way out to one of the more familiar stops on tour at the challenging Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon. Morongo was generous in giving us both courses for an extended player field with the boys playing the Champions Course, and the girls on the Legends. Both feature small greens with severe undulations which would challenge even touring pros to get a correct read. And if the courses weren’t difficult enough; Mother Nature had to throw cold weather and high winds at the field Saturday with a storm front expected mid-morning on Sunday.
Day 1 saw sunny, but cold & windy, conditions which made some holes play much longer than the scorecard showed. Not surprisingly the two toughest holes for the boys (#6 & #11) day one were playing directly into the wind and surely played nearly 100 yards longer than the yardage. Par would be a fantastic score on these two holes. Only four players managed to shoot a sub-par round which is an impressive feat on this challenging layout. Round one leaders Norman Xiong and Yu Chuan Hsiang (2-under par) had a tough task day two as many players were well within striking distance.
Over on the Legends Course, the girls had their work cut out for them as the course was running long and fast with greens that were also full of undulation and tough to hit into. Any scores around even par would put you in contention to take home a trophy. There was one girl that managed to get in the groove and take care of business on this very difficult course shooting a blistering 5-under 67! This tournament low round was shot by Escondido’s Karah Sanford. Amazing!
As expected, round two began with colder conditions with windy and cloudy skies as the front moved in threatening rain. There was extra motivation today as the players tried to get in before the weather hit! The Champions Course yielded only two under-par scores for the boys with Gookmin Kim shooting a low round for the boys at 3-under, 69 and shooting himself up the leaderboard earning a 2nd place trophy! Round one leader, Norman Xiong, followed up with a 3-over par round and maintaining his perfect record on the Toyota Tour Cup with three appearances and three wins! Congratulations, Norman!
The Legends Course would require additional holes to decide this week’s victor as two players were able to catch the leader and earn a spot in a playoff. Brianna Navarrosa continued her consistent play shooting a pair of 2-under 70’s, and Amy Matsuoka shot the low round of the day (4-under, 68) to sneak into the 3 person playoff. The rain had just begun to fall as Sanford, Navarrosa, and Matsuoka made their way out to the first playoff hole. Maybe it was the rain and cold, but the playoff ended quickly and our champion was crowned. Perhaps it was for the best, however, as the rain turned to hail and the course would have been unplayable. Congratulations Amy Matsuoka on your second Toyota Tour Cup victory!
