The Toyota Tour Cup traveled to the sandy shores of the beautiful Monarch Beach Golf Links where the players had a chance to show their stuff as college coaches were present to scout the talent.
The sun was shining on day one and a mild on-shore breeze greeted the field as they teed off with views of the Pacific Ocean. Players were poised to post a good score on this deceptively difficult par 70 layout but, even if your game wasn’t on, who could complain at such an amazing facility. Steady winds and difficult greens kept most of the field out of the red, but Chino Hill’s Darren Lin posted the only score under par leading the way with a -1 under, 69. Chasing Lin was a handful of players within two strokes including Sanghyun Sam Choi and Han Seop Lee both at even par. The ladies had similar results with nobody able to get under par. However, Redondo Beach native, Ashley Kim managed to post an even par 70 to take the round one lead by three strokes over Las Vegas’ Veronica Joels.
The final round began just as beautiful as the day before with clear sunny skies and players anxiously awaiting their name to be announced on the first tee. The pace of play moved swiftly as the SCPGA Rules Committee did a fantastic job moving the players around the course. As the day went on the weather turned, and scoring conditions were less than optimal, but that did not stop players from making birdies. Cameron Sisk was one of four players to come to the clubhouse under par and carded eight birdies through his final round and finished with a tournament low -2, 68. The other players included Cameron’s younger brother, Parker Sisk, Ryan McCoy, and Tyler Schafer all posting a one-under par, 69. However, it was Schafer’s round that put him in position and found himself tied for the lead with Brett Bennett who then headed back out to play a couple more holes to decide the victor. Both players scored a par on the first playoff hole and continued on and on the second hole Schafer once again made par to capture his first TTC victory.
The girls division had a much different outcome as the three stroke lead Kim had going into the final round was just a little too much to overcome for the players chasing her. She did not make it easy on anyone either as she continued her solid play and posted the day’s low round once again (+1, 71) and finished in convincing fashion extending her lead and also winning her first TTC event by six strokes!
Congratulations to our first time winners on the Toyota Tour Cup, Ashley Kim and Tyler Schafer!
Thank you to all of the Monarch Beach Golf Links staff and our Rules Committee!
The Tour makes its way inland next week to Temecula’s CrossCreek Golf Club, April 30th – May 1st.
