The Toyota Tour Cup Championship took the spotlight as to where the PGA Tour will be visiting in less than a month at Torrey Pines Golf Course. The legendary course that sits along the Pacific Ocean was the perfect backdrop for the final and largest tournament of the season for the Toyota Tour Cup series on December 21-22, 2013. The year-end Tour Championship features the top juniors in Southern California whom accumulate points based on their finishes throughout the 27 event yearlong schedule leading up to the Tour Championship.
Torrey Pines Golf Course is a special piece of property in La Jolla that holds many memorable moments throughout the years, with one of them being Tiger Woods winning the 2008 US Open and now to the Toyota Tour Cup Championship. The difficult setup, with some holes featuring US Open hole location, made for a true test of tournament golf. The top juniors all got a taste of a challenging course setup along with pristine conditions. With grandstands lining numerous holes in preparation for the PGA Tour visiting in weeks to follow, the atmosphere was perfectly set for some exciting golf and even more spectacular views.
Franklin Huang and Brigitte Dunne took honors in receiving the hardware for the 36-hole championship tournament that took place on both the North and South course. Huang, who was two shots behind the lead going into the final round, posted a strong 1-under 71 to be the clubhouse leader with the final two groups still on the course. Posting red numbers on the South course is an excellent round, which Huang soon found out as he was in prime position as the final groups came into the thrilling closing holes. Hidetoshi Yoshihara placed second with rounds of 69-74, for a one under tournament total. Coming in third place was Newport Laparojkit from Newport Beach with rounds of 74-70.
Brigitte Dunne put herself in a comfortable position going into the final round after having a first round under par at 71. Dunne only grew her lead and won the Tour Championship by a five shot margin. With rounds of 71-79, the 160 total was good enough for a wire to wire victory. Haley Moore and Rong Ji, who both tallied two wins this season, tied for second place in the Championship with rounds of 76-79.
The SCPGA would like to thank Torrey Pines Golf Course and staff for all of their support during the event. The venue was in prime condition and gave a great feel for the Championship. We would also like to thank Toyota for their support during the season and looking forward to their continued dedication to the Tour Cup in the upcoming season. All the sponsors who stepped up throughout the year were a great success and can’t wait to carry it over to 2014. Finally, to all the staff and rules officials who dedicated their weekend to support the Toyota Tour Cup Championship are all greatly appreciated.
A special thanks goes to Lizette Salas for coming out each day and interacting with all the players. Salas is a SCPGA Alum and currently on the LPGA Tour. It was a pleasure having her out each day on the first tee and are very thankful for her support!
