The third stop on the Tour was hosted in the rolling hills of Temecula at the treacherous Redhawk GC. This track features some of the tightest fairways these young stars will see all season long and putting the ball in the right position off the tee is paramount.
Day one was rain gear and umbrella weather when the forecast was for afternoon showers. However, it ended up raining the entire round, but it did not put a damper on things. There were lots of birdies and five eagles made throughout the day including two holes-in-one! You Seong Choi carded his third career ace on the par-3 eighth hole while Jadan Gonzalez dropped her first career ace on the par-3 fourth and took the overnight lead at one over-par. Two boys turned in -2, 70’s to lead the way for the boys. It was still a tight race and with clearing skies Sunday no lead would be safe at Redhawk.
As expected; the stroke average dropped on Sunday by three strokes for both boys and girls after the rains had passed. The tradeoff was a steady, swirling wind which the players surely preferred over rain. The hot round of the weekend went to newcomer Jack Townsend who fired a -3, 69. However, another solid round of E, 72 to follow his opening -2, 70, Taehoon Song was able to hold off Ian Maspat and Matthew Gunson. The girls though would require extra holes to decide our champion. Gonzalez, Jin, and Tsuru made pars and were tied through the first sudden-death playoff hole. Gonzalez found the water on her approach to the second playoff hole which took her out of contention, but Tsuru and Jin remained steady making par on the next three playoff holes. However, on their third lap on hole number one, we finally crowned a champion. Jin was able to fend off Tsuru’s persistence to claim her second career title. All of that wasn’t enough excitement for one day though; we had yet another hole-in-one! WanJia (Emma) Han knocked it in on the 12th to make it three aces this weekend!
Congratulations to our champions: Taehoon Song and Joyce Jin!
