COTO DE CAZA, CA – The Toyota Tour Cup wrapped up its summer in the OC at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club. This Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design features beautiful scenery and challenging tee shots where picking the right line off the tee is paramount.
The course was in immaculate shape, but well placed shots are key to scoring on this challenging layout. Players needed to stay patient and not be too aggressive as the greens were very fast with severe undulations. The players with the fewest three-putts would surely have the best shot at a trophy.
The overnight lead for boys was held by Amritpal Kang (E, 72) with two players just one shot back at +1, 73 (Choi, Nishiba). However, the only round under par day one was on the girls’ side as Alyson Bean fired a -1, 71 to lead all scores going into the final round.
Round two began in hot and extremely humid conditions with the looming threat of thunder storms just north of Coto de Caza. Unfortunately, the lightning crept closer. The horns blew and play was suspended with only 3 holes left to play. Players were rushed to the evacuation locations and waited out the storm. After a one and a half hour delay, the course was safe again and play resumed.
The only boy to shoot a red number (Sodetz) was vaulted into the early clubhouse lead and anxiously waited for the last group to come in. However, he would be one stroke shy and remain in a tie for 2nd with Krando Nishiba. After back to back 73’s, recently turned 12 year old Hacienda Heights’ You Seong Choi captured his first TTC victory.
The hot round of the day went to Lauren Cho as she carded an impressive 8 birdies on this difficult course and came into the clubhouse under par with a -1, 71. However, Briana Chacon would also fire a -1, 71 after a 74 day one to edge out overnight leader Alyson Bean by one shot and claim the trophy.
Congratulations to our champions!
