USGA Rules Modernization: Proposed Changes
9th Annual Oak Valley Cup
Team SCPGA and Team Chinese battled it out once again at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, CA on July 5th-6th. Six boys and six girls were selected to represent each side over two days of Ryder Cup style matches. Team Chinese has won the previous two years and looking for the hat trick.
Day one was a grueling 36-holes of play beginning with foursome matches (alternate shot) with four-ball matches in the afternoon (better ball). The SCPGA boys closed out several matches early in the morning giving us the early lead (4-2). The afternoon’s four-ball matches were a different story as many matches could have gone either way. However, SCPGA was able to edge the competition by one point (3 1/2-2 1/2). After day one team SCPGA lead by three: 7 1/2-4 1/2.
Day two was the singles matches where anything goes. The boys matches were all close through their first 9 holes, but once the girls hit the course things got interesting. Tonkham was first out playing well carding an eagle three on the fifth and would go on to win her match 5&3. Shortly after that Villegas got off to a hot start chipping in for birdie on the first and holing a nice birdie putt on two to go 2UP. Right behind her Avery was lighting it up. With a birdie on the first and holing out for an eagle two on the second hole, she found herself 2UP through two as well.
The pieces started coming together on back nine of the singles matches as team SCPGA began closing out their individual matches and led to a convincing 16 to 8 victory.
