This year’s 2016 Mary Cave Cup travel team consisted of four very special girls. We all took a trip down south to the wonderful Sycuan Resort to compete August 2-3. This trip consisted of a lot of golf, laughter, and learning. These girls walked 54 holes in three days whilst battling mental and physical fatigue. Without further ado, let’s look over a short recap of how these girls faired against the stiff competition.
Day one consisted of pro caliber golf. Starting off both Mackenzie Bailey and Brianna Navarrosa sunk over 20 foot birdie putts on the first hole. Seven holes later both teams were four under par and looking sharper than ever. The true test was in the afternoon on the back nine where temperatures reached over 90 degrees. Team two Serena Chon stood up to the challenge and shot three under on the back nine to solidify a team score of 69 (three under). Team one stayed steady and finished round one with a respectable 71 (one under). This put our girls tied for first and second place going into day two.
After a good night’s sleep and team pep talk the girls were ready to take their trophies. With focus in their eyes and hunger in their hearts they tee’d off and never looked back. Both teams played absolute stellar golf. Angelina Kim, Brianna Navarrosa, Serena Chon and Mackenzie Bailey were the epitome of teamwork. It was ham and egg workshop out there for team SCPGA. Brianna birdied both 17 and 18 which resulted in her team total of 66 (6 under). This gave them the first place finish by one stroke. Brianna also won the low medalist for the tournament with her 75 day one and 69 day two. Team two Consisted of impressive birdies from Mackenzie Bailey and clutch, consistent par saves from Serena Chon. Mackenzie sunk a 20 footer on 18 to lead her team into solo second by one shot. Serena and Mackenzie faired with a 69 day one and 69 day two.
This trip showed how powerful teamwork can be and how a round of golf can change not only your relationships with one another, but your attitude towards life. These girls showed up to the Sycuan Resort as strangers, but checked out as close friends. Their attitudes were impeccable and sportsmanship next to none. These four picks were not just random; fate played a role in this year’s Mary Cave Cup team and I couldn’t be more proud of these four girls.
Thank you to Megan Mahoney and everyone involved that helped this event take place. This was a truly phenomenal experience and I know it has touched everyone that participated in one way or another. Also, thank you to our sponsors, Cobra Puma Golf for the polo shirts and Ogio for the custom golf bags.
