WHITTIER, California – The SCPGA hosted the annual Junior PGA Section Championship at the California County Club on June 29th-30th. Contested over two days, 132 players arrived to compete in this championship event, with the overall champion and runner-up from the Boy’s and Girl’s divisions advancing to the National Junior PGA Championship, hosted at the Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri.
With the National PGA Junior Championship exemption going to the top two overall winners of the 12-18 divisions, the players had their work cut out for them. After day one in the girls division, there was a tie in the top spots, with Joan Soewondo and Angelina Kim both firing two under, 72’s. Taking things to the next level in the final round, 14 year old Angelina Kim rose to the occasion, firing an impressive six under, 68, claiming her the first exemption spot with her two-day total of 140. Placing runner up overall for the girls, and picking up the second exemption was Joan Soewondo, posting two-day total of two under par, 146. Congratulations to our girls division champions! We wish Angelina and Joan all the best at the Girls National Championship which will take place July 18th-21st!
With a large turnout in the boys division, the competition was fierce. The day one leaders were Alrik Pan five under, 67 and Darren Lin right on his heals at four under, 68. The final round saw Darren Lin break away from the pack, and claim the first exemption spot, shooting final round 71 for two-day total of 139. Claiming the second exemption for the boys was Cameron Sisk, carding a final round 70, for a two-day total of 142. We wish the best of luck to Darren & Cameron at the boys National Championship which will be held July 31st-August 3rd.
