LA QUINTA, California – The season’s ninth stop was a familiar one at The Golf Club at La Quinta. Players are always in for a treat as Tournament Director Miguel Rascon recruits a team of members from the club to come out and help repair divots, provide water, and shuttle players.
Day one was hot and so were the scores. Twenty-two boys posted scores of even-par or better with San Diego native Caden Fioroni shooting a personal best -8, 64 to carry a four stroke lead over another San Diegan, Eric Doyle. Nodoka Honda and Megan Gormley shared the overnight lead both firing red numbers and just one shot back was Michelle Wong at E, 72.
After a low scoring Saturday, players were hoping to come back Sunday and go even lower. However, windy conditions and very tough hole locations kept the players in check. A few boys still managed to go low today led by an impressive -6, 66 by Cameron Xiao vaulting him into a tie for 3rd, but nobody would catch the red hot Fioroni. He kept the ball rolling and carded another red number finishing at -11 for the tournament, five shots clear of Derrick Liu. The conditions proved to be tough for the girls as none managed to post a round in the red on Sunday. After all cards were in, we had two tied and requiring additional play to determine a champion. Nodoka Honda and Catherine Park made their way back out to the 1st tee to play off for the trophy. Both two-putted for par on the first and headed over to the 18th where Park made a par and closed out the competition.
Congratulations to our newest champions: Caden Fioroni and Catherine Park.
