The SCPGA Boys team traveled to Boulder Ridge Country Club in San Jose and met the team from Northern California for the cup matches of the 56th Annual California Junior Amateur Championships on August 7th. After making the 6 hour drive and getting in a practice round on Saturday the team headed out for some team camaraderie and a well-deserved dinner and some much needed rest. The team consisted of; Derek Kim, Andrew Liao, AJ Roa, Ray Navis, Roman Aragon, Sam Butler, Max Moore, Adrian Edralin, Brian Mai & Noah Mayne.
Sunday morning dawned cool and cloudy and in the low 50’s temperature wise. This was a stark contrast to the Southern California weather that most of team SOCAL has seen for at least the last few months. The morning matches saw the boys battling hard to shake off the cold but only able to grab one point in the alternate shot format. Team SOCAL was not deterred however and came out strong in the afternoon singles and played with guts and determination, refusing to let the North run away with the matches. In the end the morning lead was just too much for the South to overcome and while several matches were still in question the North halved a match that made it mathematically impossible for the South to win or tie.
Highlights included Andrew Liao taking his match all the way to the 18th hole after his opponent opened his round reeling off four straight birdies to go 2 up after four holes, Andrew held him off from complete domination by throwing two birdies of his own in and with spectacular solid play through the middle of the match. Raymond Navis and Noah Mayne both took their singles matches along with A.J. Roa who was probably playing in his last ever round associated with the SCPGA Junior Tour, good luck to A.J. as he pursues a college career.
