The Mary Cave Cup was named in honor of The San Diego Junior Golf Association’s dedicated volunteer of nearly 50 years, Mary Cave. It was founded in 2004 to provide a 36-hole, four-ball tournament for young female golfers. The 2018 event took place on August 8th and 9th at The Sycuan Resort in El Cajon, California. There were two teams representing Southern California, Nodoka Honda and Sherilyn Villanueva and team Jadan Gonzalez and Vanessa Wang. Our seasoned Toyota Tour Cup players went up against 18 other teams from the western United States, including Hawaii, Mexico, Arizona, and San Diego. Team Gonzalez and Wang finished the first day unscathed, carding 6 birdies and not a single bogie to tie the lead at 66. Team Honda and Villanueva also had an impressive round carding 6 birdies and only two bogies for a 68 total. On the stroke play side of the event, Sherilyn alone captured 5 birdies on her way to a 1-under par round, making her the lone leader after day 1.
For the second round, the pressure was on as both SoCal Teams played against the leaders. Neither team saw a birdie until at least the 5th hole which decreased momentum tremendously. Team Honda and Villanueva went birdie-birdie-birdie on holes 5, 6, and 7, however, the other teams had carded early birdies to put them ahead. They finished 4-under for the day, 8-under for the event. Unfortunately for team Gonzalez and Wang, their symbiosis was off from the previous day and they would both birdie and bogie the same holes, leading to a 2-under round for the day, tying team Honda and Villanueva at 8-under for fourth place. Sherilyn followed up her solid round of 71 with a 73, but fell short of just two strokes of Riana Mission for first place.
Thank you SDJGA for hosting this event and making it a great experience for all and congratulations to Southern Nevada and San Diego for taking home the trophy!
