The Bridgestone Summer Tournament of Champions was recently held on the 22nd and 23rd of August at The Vineyards at Escondido. The trip south was a welcome break from the triple-digit temperatures gripping many of the recent SCPGA Junior Tour events. The great weather and beautiful course had all players hopes high to be named “Bridgestone Champion”. The Vineyards proved to be a tough test, as only one player in the 122 player field managed to average under par for the two rounds. This difficult challenge was accomplished by Eric Lee in the Boys 9-11 division who carded a three under 32 on both days! We will all be looking for great things from this player in the future.
In the girls divisions the first place trophy for the 14-18 year olds went to Sherilyn Villanueva who was the victor in a one hole playoff after tying with eventual second place finisher Ping Huang at +7 147 after 36 holes. Sofia Chabon, spending her summer playing on the SCPGA Junior tour all the way from the Philippines, Grabbed third place at +8, one shot out of the playoff. All three 14-18 girls have punched their tickets for the fall Toyota Tour Cup series so congratulations to them! Kayla Sam, the 12-13 girls champion, took the field by six shots to win outright with a +8, 148. Fracesca Bernice Olivarez-Ilas took second with a two day 154. Daisy Wan shot 76-79 and that gave her a third place trophy and enough points to move up to the Toyota Tour Cup as well. Congratulations Daisy! The 9-11 girls were led by Joshlyn Ayala with a two day total of 6 over 76. Second was shared by Rachel LeMay and Nalani Sam before a scorecard playoff had Rachel taking second and Nalani winning the third place trophy. Congratulations to all the girls on two well played rounds.
The boys divisions were also well played and hard fought. The “old” guys of the 15-18 division were led by Steve Sugimoto of nearby San Diego who evened out his first day two over 72 with a two under 68 to take the win at even par 140. Jeff Carr from far away Arroyo Grande took second after a brilliant first day 67 and a second day 74. At the scorer’s table on the second day Jeff admittedly remarked, “I couldn’t score today because I didn’t make any birdies”. We have all been there Jeff! Third was wrapped up by Mason Chiu who was right there with a +2 142. For the 12-14 year old gentlemen, winning by 5 shots at 143 was Krando Nishiba, also from San Diego. Second place went to Edward Wu of San Marino at 148 who won the card off for the hardware over Riversides Johnny Walker who also shot a nice two day 148 with rounds of 76-72. The 9-11 boys were led by the previously mentioned Eric Lee at six under par after two days and 18 holes, way to go Eric! Kai Hirayama and Edwin Lam both carded 70 after two rounds and split points for second and third places.
